Selecting a Toilet

Most people assume that a toilet is a toilet. However, the options available on toilets are amazing. Besides looking at the style of the unit, which can range from Victorian traditional styles to the ultra-modern look, the mechanics of the toilet are something to be considered.

Today there are two different types of toilets on the market. The standard toilets offer an industry standard 1.6 gallons per flush option. While this is a great improvement over the old toilets, which used 3.5 gallons of water per flush, the new toilets on the market are made to use just 1.28 gallons per flush. Although they use less water, today's technology allows these toilets to flush efficiently the first time.

Homeowners should decide what height they prefer for their toilet. The standard toilet height has been giving way to the popular “comfort height” models, which have a seat height 2” taller than standard. This makes getting on and off of the seat easier, and it is accessible for those in wheelchairs.

Many homeowners have a preference regarding the shape of the oilet bowl. Elongated bowls are the most popular. However, not every bathroom is large enough to accommodate an elongated bowl. In tight spaces, a round bowl is the better choice.

In order to save water, dual flush toilets are a great choice. These units offer a .9 gallon flush option, as well as a 1.6 gallon option. A double button on top of the tank operates the flushing mechanism. More homeowners are also opting for a toilet with a standard 1.28 gallon flush, to conserve water.
